Although more and more women are surviving, breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK and it has been on the rise for several years. In 1999, 42,400 women were diagnosed with the disease. The odds that a woman would develop breast cancer during her lifetime were one in nine. A risk factor is anything that affects your chance of getting a disease, such as cancer. Different cancers have different risk factors. For example, exposing skin to strong sunlight is a risk factor for skin cancer. Smoking is a risk factor for cancers of the lung, mouth, larynx (voice box), bladder, kidney, and several other organs. By asking them to do this they will know you care about their health and you are a true and proud supporter of helping find a cure for breast cancer.
